Initiating New Friendships

Initiating new friendships is such an important and beautiful aspect of living in community and growing in faith. It's not always easy, but it's deeply rewarding, especially when rooted in Christ. Genuine friendships can encourage us, hold us accountable, and help us navigate life’s ups and downs with hope and strength.

Here are a few ways you can initiate new friendships in a way that reflects both spiritual growth and mutual support:

1. Be Intentional in Your Approach

  • Pray for guidance: Before reaching out, take a moment to pray and ask God to lead you to women who need connection and encouragement. Trust that He’ll direct you.
  • Start with vulnerability: When starting a conversation, share a little about your journey—your struggles, victories, or prayer requests. Vulnerability invites others to do the same and creates a deeper level of connection.
  • Be friendly and sociable... by smiling, introducing yourself to people in close proximity to you, and by inviting people to your home for social events. (1 Peter 4:9–11)
  • Don’t put God...in a box or underestimate the people you meet. (1 Thessalonians 2:9; Romans 16:6, 12)

2. Look for Shared Interests

  • Find common ground: Whether it's Bible study, serving in ministry, or a shared hobby or interest, starting with something you both enjoy can naturally foster friendship.
  • Look for opportunities... to meet other people who share your same values and interests. (Colossians 4:5)
  • Host or join a small group: Whether it’s a prayer circle, book study, or a social gathering, these environments allow for organic connections to form around shared values and experiences.

3. Practice Active Listening

  • Be present: People appreciate being heard. Ask open-ended questions about their life, their faith journey, and their goals, and truly listen. This shows you value them as individuals.
  • Offer support: Sometimes, just showing up and being there for someone, even in a small way, is enough to build a lasting connection.

4. Serve Together

  • Serve in ministry: Volunteering or serving together in any capacity—whether it’s at church, a community event, or a local outreach—creates a natural bond. There’s something powerful about sharing the experience of serving others in Jesus’ name.
  • Invite them to join you in something you’re already doing: For example, if you’re involved in a Bible study, a prayer group, or a community event, invite a potential friend to join you. Shared experiences foster lasting relationships.

5. Be Patient and Consistent

  • Friendship takes time: Building meaningful relationships takes patience. Not every interaction will lead to a deep friendship right away, but every effort you make helps lay the groundwork for something lasting.
  • Check in regularly: A simple message or a thoughtful gesture can make a big difference. Follow up, ask how they’re doing, or invite them to coffee. Consistency builds trust.
  • Eliminate expectations... of any kind and make it your goal to develop skills that will help you make conversation when around new people.  (Matthew 7:12)

6. Create a Welcoming Environment

  • Make others feel included: Invite others into your space, whether it’s a Bible study at your home, a walk in the park, or a coffee date. When people feel safe and welcomed, they are more likely to open up and connect with you.
  • Celebrate small wins together: Take the time to celebrate birthdays, prayers answered, or milestones, whether big or small. Shared joy strengthens relationships.

7. Be Christlike in Your Friendship

  • Relax and just be yourself... Trust God to make you a person of interest to whomever would be a positive person in your life. (Proverbs 13:5)
  • Show love and grace: Just as Jesus showed unconditional love, be a reflection of His grace in your friendships. Celebrate one another's successes, encourage each other during hard times, and be quick to forgive when misunderstandings arise.
  • Pray for your new friendships: Always invite God into your relationships. Pray together, pray for each other, and ask God to guide and strengthen the bonds you’re forming.

New friendships are such a blessing because they bring new perspectives, growth, and accountability into our lives. In Christ, there’s a deep, eternal connection that transcends everything else. When we walk in faith together, we can encourage each other to live in victory and overcome life’s challenges. The key is to be authentic, patient, and filled with grace as we build these relationships.
